How to pick the best web design
agency in LA (without guessing)

There is no single best web design agency in LA — there is only the right fit for your budget, timeline and category. This is the framework we give people who are comparing us against three other shops, including the questions that make bad agencies uncomfortable.

Why “best” is the wrong question

Search results for the best web design agency in LA are mostly directories that charge agencies for placement, and listicles written by people who have never hired one. The rankings are bought. Treat them as a starting list of names, nothing more.

A better question is: which agency has done this exact job, for a business my size, in the last eighteen months? An agency that is genuinely excellent at DTC ecommerce can be a poor choice for a personal injury firm, and vice versa. Category experience beats a general reputation almost every time.

The three types of shop you will meet in LA

Match the tier to the actual size of the problem. Hiring a 200-person agency to build a twelve-page site for a dental practice is how projects end up costing $60,000 and taking nine months.

Scoring sheet

Six things to score every LA agency on

Rate each one out of five as you go through your shortlist. Anything scoring under 3 on the first three is a hard pass.

Do they talk about outcomes?

In the first call, count how many minutes pass before they ask what a customer is worth to you. If it never comes up, they are selling design, not results.

Weight: high

Who actually does the work?

Ask for the names and titles of everyone who will touch the project, and whether any of it is subcontracted. Get the answer in writing before signing.

Weight: high

Can they prove performance?

Ask them to run PageSpeed Insights on three of their own recent client sites, live, on the call. Real field data. Agencies that build slow sites will change the subject.

Weight: high

Is the scope written down?

A good proposal names the exact page count, revision rounds, what happens if you go over, and what is explicitly excluded. Vague scope is where budgets die.

Weight: medium

Do you own everything after?

Code, design files, domain, hosting, CMS admin. If the answer involves a proprietary builder you cannot export from, you are renting your website forever.

Weight: medium

References you can actually call

Not logos on a page — two client contacts from projects that shipped in the last year, with phone numbers. Ask them what went wrong and how it got handled.

Seven things that should end the conversation

One question worth more than the rest

“Tell me about a project that went badly and what you changed afterwards.” Every agency that has been running more than three years has one. The ones who claim they do not are either new or lying, and both are useful to know.

Being fair about it

Where we are a good fit — and where we are not

We are a mid-size independent studio in Downtown LA. We are a good fit if you are a Los Angeles business between roughly $1M and $50M in revenue, you need the site to generate leads or sales, and you want the same people through the whole project.

We are the wrong call if you need a site live in two weeks, if your budget is under $5,000, or if you want a pure brand identity exercise with no performance mandate. In those cases we will point you toward a freelancer or a brand studio and we will not charge you for the conversation.

If you are still comparing, run the scoring sheet above on us alongside everyone else. We would rather lose on a fair comparison than win a project we are wrong for.

Common questions

Questions people ask while comparing agencies

Not reliably. Price in LA tracks agency overhead — office space, headcount, account management — more closely than it tracks output quality. What price does buy you is capacity and process maturity. A $40,000 project should come with strategy, research and testing that a $9,000 project cannot include.

Three is the useful number. One gives you no reference point, five wastes weeks and the proposals start blurring. Give all three the exact same brief in writing so the quotes are comparable.

Local helps in two specific ways: they understand the LA market and competitive set, and local SEO strategy benefits from that. It does not help with the build itself. If a remote agency is clearly stronger on your category, take the remote agency.

Fixed scope with page count, number of revision rounds, payment milestones tied to deliverables rather than dates, an explicit IP transfer clause, and what happens if either side walks away mid-project. Get a lawyer to read anything over $25,000.

Look up the case study URL in the Wayback Machine and check the date the design appeared. Then run a WHOIS or check the site footer credit. It takes five minutes and it catches a surprising number of borrowed portfolios.
